About Scotty

On a snowy morning in post-war Scotland, a bricklayer rode in the bed of a lorry when he noticed a young woman riding her bike in the lorry’s snow-packed tracks. Every morning for weeks, the young woman would take advantage of the flattened snow the lorry left behind to aid her on her bike ride to work at a local hotel. Then one morning, the young man walked into the hotel and asked the young woman out to a dance. She agreed (because of his good looks and blonde hair). A short time later the two were married. Walter and Gertrude Ross (née Halliday) went on to have two children in Scotland before immigrating to the United States. In America, Walter and Gertrude (both nicknamed “Scotty” in America) had three more children. From Kircudbright to Chicago and then eventually settling in the Bay Area, the two had five children, seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and more great-great grandchildren.

“Scotty” left Scotland where, at times, they lived in homes with no running water. In America, they went on to purchase a home in California, have careers, and Walter became a US citizen. Because of their sacrifices, Scotty’s descendants went on to become nurses, union workers, foremen, business owners, lawyers, and college graduates (one, a Celtic Studies graduate). This scholarship is in memory of “Scotty” and their sacrifices to give their kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, and great-great grandkids an opportunity for a better life in America and for passing along their love for everything Scottish and Celtic.
